The loss of an eye is a traumatic experience. We take every step to ensure that the fit and cosmetic appearance of the prosthesis brings comfort and confidence back to every patient. We pride ourselves on our prosthetic artistry.
What We Provide
Our custom conformers are made of clear acrylic. Wearing a custom conformer after recent orbital surgery will help to ensure that your first artificial eye continues to fit well and look good for the longest possible time. An appointment for a conformer typically lasts one hour.
Each artificial eye or scleral shell is unique and one-of-a-kind. It is sculpted and painted to fit only its owner. We hand sculpt a wax pattern for each patient’s prosthesis. The finished wax pattern is then used to make a mold for the prosthesis. The acrylic prosthesis is cast from the mold. Fitting appointments typically last 2 ½ hours.
Each artificial eye or scleral shell is hand painted to match a patient’s unique eye color and pattern. During the painting appointment, patients model in the presence of the ocularist for about 2 hours while iris colors and vein patterns are duplicated on the acrylic casting.
The artificial eye or scleral shell is ready for the patient to wear at the delivery appointment. The patient is shown how to insert and remove the prosthesis themselves, as well as how to keep it clean and comfortable. Comfort and aesthetic match are checked. This appointment usually lasts one hour.
Cleaning and polishing artificial eyes and scleral shells is recommended once every six months to maintain healthy socket conjunctiva. Patients wait comfortably in a private exam room while the ocularist removes their prosthesis to the lab, disinfects it, removes protein deposits and surface scratches, and restores its highly polished surface. It is then disinfected again and returned to the patient’s socket.
